St. Peter’s Chorister to Attend Summer Course in Newport, R.I.
One of the St. Peter’s Choristers, Will F., will be attending a Royal School of Church Music Summer Course in Newport, R.I. July 31 to August 6. He is the first Chorister from St. Peter’s to attend such a course in recent memory.
The Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) is an international, ecumenical organization devoted to the advancement of church music and the training of singers, especially young people. Many Episcopal church choirs, including St. Peter’s, are among the 11,000 RSCM member organizations.
Choristers who attend an RSCM course have a busy schedule. There are daily services (usually daily Morning Prayer and Choral Evensong), and various rehearsals for different configurations of voices throughout the day. The week culminates in two services, Choral Evensong and a Choral Eucharist.
The Newport Course will be led by Sarah MacDonald, a Fellow and Director of Music at Selwyn College, Cambridge, and the director of the Ely Cathedral Girls Choir. Rob Lehman, the Organist & Choirmaster of the Church of St. Michael & St. George in Clayton will serve as Assistant Music Director.
Another RSCM Course was held in St. Louis earlier this month, led by Stephen Buzard of St. James Cathedral, Chicago. David Sinden served as the Adult Housemaster, leading daily rehearsals of the teen and adult voices.
