The St. Peter’s Choristers: Christian Formation through Song

????????????????????????????????????

BY DAVID SINDEN, ORGANIST AND DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

Attention Parents and Children of St. Peter’s:

St. Peter’s has had a choir for young people for many years and for good reason: singing sacred music from a young age is a very formative experience. Young people learn about teamwork, responsibility, commitment, setting and achieving high standards, how to read music, and how to sing. These are all lifelong skills.

Many of the hymns and anthems Choristers sing as children will remain close to their hearts throughout their lives, and they will be able to take part in this great tradition in Episcopal and Anglican churches around the world. They will have a unique, up-close encounter with Christian faith and worship.

Additionally, the chorister training program at St. Peter’s is affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) in America and offers one-on-one and small group attention as we work on ear training, sight reading, music history, and music theory. This is a comprehensive music education that is increasingly rare in schools – and it’s free!

The RSCM offers many week-long summer training courses for young people, and one of our young choristers attended a course in Newport, Rhode Island this past summer. These are wonderful experiences that afford children and adults to make music at the highest level and make lasting friendships with other singers like themselves

I am always delighted to meet boys and girls, age eight and up (or age seven for advanced readers), and their families who are interested in being a part of the St. Peter’s Choristers. No prior musical experience is necessary. This opportunity is truly open to you!

New choristers begin as “Probationers” who are free to try the choir with no commitment to join.

The RSCM Choristers’ Prayer
Bless, O Lord, us Thy servants,
who minister in Thy temple.
Grant that what we sing with our lips,
we may believe in our hearts,
and what we believe in our hearts,
we may show forth in our lives.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
